SOCIAL SECURITY
If you have injuries that keep you from working, you may be entitled to substantial back benefits and ongoing benefits as well as Medicare. The combination of Medicare and Social Security benefits can literally be worth millions of dollars over your lifetime and that of your dependents so it is critical you pursue the benefits timely, properly and aggressively.
There are actually 2 programs available you may be eligible under, Supplemental Security Income [SSI} and Social Security Disability Insurance [SSDI]. You must meet strict income and asset requirements for SSI. For SSDI, you must have worked a sufficient number of qualifying quarters to be covered. For each program you must establish you are essentially unable to work any job in the national economy. The requirement changes a bit as you age.
Under either program, it is critical that you timely apply for benefits. We can help with this process or, if you prefer, you can get things started by calling the Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213 or going online at ssa.gov. You will need your birth certificate, your Social Security Number and you should also have a list of all your health care providers [including name, address and phone number] and a list of all medications you are on including the name of the prescribing medical provider and the dosage.
If an unfavorable decision has already been rendered in your case, you have a limited time [usually 60 days] within which to appeal by asking for a hearing. This is a very important time limit and you will be working uphill if you miss it.
